Interview de Artie NG d’origine de Singapore et habitant en Australie, cet interview est en anglais :

Hello Artie, can you describe your photographic career?

It really started around 4 months ago when I purchased a Canon DSLR rebel XTI and began capturing shots of Adelaide City in South Australia. I considered taking up some formal training however while researching, I came across Flickr and made contact with one person in particular (Erlend Robaye) who recognised my potential and became my mentor in HDR. He offered me constructive criticism and gave me an insight into the techniques of achieving quality HDRs.

What’s your preferred photographic subjects?

Landscape, seascape & cityscape are my preferred area of interest. Within that, I select subjects which capture my interest and imagination. I like symmetry and clean lines however I also like to inject a sense of atmosphere, drama and narrative.

What is the main theme or your subjects in generally?

I do not really have a common thread to my work as I like to keep my eyes open for all opportunities and do not wish to be restrained in my subject matter.

How do you have discovered the HDR photography?

I came across my first HDR in Flickr site and I was intrigued by the beauty of it and how unusual I found it.

What is the element which convinced you to try the HDR photography then to adopt it?

Initially I found HDR daunting however my mentor, and a Singapore friend Darrell Neo, encouraged me to try and assisted me in getting started. My first results were quite promising and I was enthusiastic and determined to improve.

Why the HDR photography is now a indispensable technique or often used in your shots?

The HDR technique accommodates my style and compliments my subject matters. HDR also allows me to express my artistic nature and creativity. It also provides me a great deal of pleasure and personal satisfaction.

Which is your HDR photographic style : true tone HDR or impressionist HDR?

My HDR photographic style is basically realism with an impressionistic tone.

What process do you have to merge sources images, the tone mapping and with which software?

To create a hdr, I normally take a standard 3 exposures shots (-2..0..+2EV) using my Canon Rebel XTI with the default kit lens EF-S 18-55mm lens, Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens and tripod. I use Photomatix to create a tonemapped HDR base image with the 3 exp shots followed by Photoshop CS2 post processing.

HDR is a way for me to re-create the moment i took the shots with a dash of magic. Normally a photo could look quite plain without HDR processing. However with HDR processing, it turns a simple photo into a work of art.

I love dynamic & saturated colours and HDR image exactly expresses how i feel a work of art should be. To me, HDR brings out the best in my shots and takes my photography to another level

Do you know other photographers who practising the HDR photography, of which you appreciate their works?

For consistency and high quality work, I would recommend Erlend Robaye (Erroba) and Darrell Neo.

What is your photographic events in the next months?

Within the next 12 months, I intend staging an exhibition of my HDR work at a local art gallery. Possibly in conjunction with other artists. My work will be for sale and I am looking forward to getting some response from the general public to my endeavours in HDR.
